Pharmacy can be simply described as the science and use of drugs. It

has to do with the practice of formulating, preparing, prescribing,

and reviewing drugs, so as to ensure that drugs prescribed are safe,

effective, and affordable. Pharmacy has close ties with the health

sciences and natural sciences. Pharmacy is a five Year programme.

Students who study Pharmacy are offered a certificate, B.Pharm at the

Clinical pharmacy & Bio-pharmacy: This is the aspect of pharmacy that

provides training on issues such as consultancy and advice of patients

on the proper use of medicine. It also deals with drug administration,

drug performance, interactions, dispensing of prescribed medication

and drug supplies to the consumers.



Pharmaceutical Chemistry: This is the aspect of pharmacy that studies

the structure and properties of chemical substances (natural or

synthetic) used in medicine. It also studies the relationship of these

structures to biological activity.



Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology: This is concerned with

the art and science of preparing medicines from natural sources such

as plants, animals, minerals, microorganisms etc and synthetic

sources. It also has to do with finding the suitable materials for use

of medicine preparation in the treatment and prevention of diseases.



Pharmacognosy: This is the study and application of physical and

physicochemical properties of substances used in medicine for the

formulation and production of medicinal products. It includes the

study of pharmaceutical formulations, technology; quality assurance

and controls of drugs.

General Entry Requirements to study Pharmacy in Nigerian Universities



In order to be considered for admission to study a first degree in

Pharmacy, candidate must meet the following requirements:Candidate

must have obtained five credit passes in not more than two sittings in

the following examinations:

General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level Examination



West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE)



National Examination Council



National Business and Technical Examination Board or other equivalent

examinations

Candidate must have obtained the minimum cut-off score in UME conducted by JAMB

Candidate must meet the particular department’s requirement under

the faculty of Pharmacy



Candidates seeking admission into the five-year scheduled Pharmacy

programme via Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are

required to have obtained credit passes credit passes in the following

subjects: English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and

Biology at (SSCE) Senior Secondary School Certificate or its

equivalent. This is in addition to meeting other minimum University

entry requirements such as appropriate screening exercises for

candidates.



Four Year Programme- Pharmacy via direct entry





Students seeking admission via Direct Entry are admitted into the

four-year programme. Such candidates must have obtained the following

requirements:

A pass in Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Botany or Zoology at the

Higher School Certificate (Principal Level), in addition to credit

passes in English language and Mathematics in (SSCE) Senior Secondary

School Certificate or its equivalent.



Candidates with passes at the Advanced Level should must have been

obtained the biological sciences at not more than two sittings.



A candidate who already holds a first degree or Higher National

Diploma (HND) in the biological sciences or medical sciences such as

veterinary medicine may be admitted via direct entry.



Candidates seeking admission via direct entry into 200 level of the

Pharmacy programme must in addition to the requirements above, have

obtained credit passes in the following: Chemistry, Biology, and

Physics, at the GCE “A†Level or HSC. Results must be obtained at

not more than two sittings.

Candidates with a first degree in science courses such as Botany or

Zoology may be considered for admission in place of a credit in

Biology.

Job Opportunities in Pharmacy Practice



Students of Pharmacy have career prospects in various branches of

practice in the profession of Pharmacy. These include: Hospital,

Pharmaceutical Industry, the Academia, Pharmaceutical Research

Institutes, Government Services and health-related NGOs.

Pharmacy is a science that links with health sciences and natural

sciences. Pharmacists work in pharmacies such as in general

merchandise, grocery stores, hospitals and other healthcare

facilities.

Community pharmacists work as consultants dispensing medications to

patients and offering advice or answers to any questions that patients

may have about prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, or other

health concerns.

Pharmacists may also provide some primary care services.

Clinical pharmacists work in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare

settings. These ones spend little time prescribing drugs. Instead,

they are involved in direct care of patients. Clinical pharmacists

just like Doctors may go on rounds in a hospital or healthcare

facility. These ones can also recommend medications to patients and

oversee the dosage and timing of the delivery of those medications.

Clinical Pharmacists can also conduct some medical tests and offer

advice to patients.

Consultant pharmacists: Pharmacists in this role advise healthcare

facilities and individual patients on patient medication use or how to

improve pharmacy services.



Pharmacists may also help to establish safety regulations and ensure

quality control for drugs.

Pharmaceutical industry pharmacists work in research institutes to

help in conducting and designing appropriate drugs

Pharmacists are also involved in areas such as marketing, sales.

Academia: Some pharmacists can work as university lecturers. Here,

they may teach pharmacy students or be involved in research work.
